Glass Jewelry
Glass jewelry and practices related to it are among the
oldest human arts. Naturally occurring glass, such as obsidian, was
utilized during the stone age. True glass is dated back to the middle
of the third millennium B.C. These artifacts were glass beads of Old
Kingdom Egypt.
Today, glass jewelry is created through several different methods.
Most glass beads will fall into three different categories. These categories
are wound, drawn, and molded.
Composite glass jewelry also exist. A good example of this is millefiori.
This glasswork technique involves wrapping cross-sections of drawn glass
around a wound glass core. The end result is a mosaic appearance.
