Gemstone jewelry makes use of precious or semi-precious stones. These are created from various attractive minerals. It is cut or polished for different ornamental applications.

The gems used in gemstone jewelry are classified into different groups, species, and varieties. For example, morganite, heliodor, and aquamarine are all varieties of the species beryl. Different gems are characterized by such things as lustre, fracture, and hardness.

It is interesting to know that gemstone jewelry is not always a mineral. Certain rocks and organic materials are considered gemstones purely because they are used for jewelry. Jet, amber, and lapis-lazuli are a few examples of these.
